Standard Treatment There are five treatment options for this early-stage tumor .
Freezing the cervix (cryotherapy) can be performed in the doctor's office and has a negligible complication rate.
Loop electrical excision (LEEP) is becoming more popular because of its diagnostic accuracy, technical ease and low cost.
Laser therapy is usually done for larger lesions.
A cervical conization not only is for cure but is often performed in women in whom colposcopy cannot distinguish between dysplasia and an underlying invasive carcinoma. A LEEP cone biopsy can be done in the doctor's office with a local anesthetic.
For women who have completed their childbearing or have several recurrences, the removal of the uterus and cervix (hysterectomy) is often recommended.
Stage 0 (Adenocarcinoma)
Standard Treatment Adenocarcinoma in situ (confined to the surface of the cervix) is often difficult to diagnose. The diagnosis is usually made with a cervical biopsy or an endocervical curettage. In all cases a conization is required to rule out a truly invasive lesion.
